What a check costs: the price ladder
Each check is $2.50 or less when we find the insurance, and $0 when we can't find it.

Checks are billed separately from your plan, once a month, on a ladder that steps down as your office runs more of them. You see two charges a month: one for your plan, and one for your checks. (On a yearly plan, the plan is charged once a year.)
Your first 100 checks are $2.50 each. Checks after that cost less. The ladder starts over every month.

Your first 100 checks are $2.50 each. Checks after that cost less. The ladder starts over every month. A check counts as found when the carrier finds the patient's plan, even if it shows the coverage has ended.
An example: 120 checks in one month
100 × $2.50 + 20 × $2.25 = $295. Billed once a month, separate from your plan.
$0 when we can't find the insurance
A check that comes back not found is free, as long as every required box was filled in when you ran it: the patient's legal name and date of birth, the insurance carrier, the member ID, the policyholder's full Social Security number (the last four alone isn't enough), and the policyholder's home address. For a dependent, the policyholder's name, date of birth, and relationship to the patient are required too. If a required box was blank, a not-found check is billed like a found one. A bulk list highlights any blank required box in red before it runs, so you can fill it in first.
A check also costs $0 when it doesn't go through because the carrier's system is down or can't be reached, or because of a problem with your office's own enrollment with that carrier.
Good to know
No processing fees. Sales tax is added where a state requires it.
