The D9310 dental code shows up anytime one dentist sends a patient to another provider for an opinion. We hear from front desk teams who are not sure whether a referral visit counts as D9310, D0140, or something else entirely. Here is what the code actually covers, when to use it, and what to check before you bill it.

What Is the D9310 Dental Code?

The D9310 dental code is a CDT procedure code for a consultation, a diagnostic service given by a dentist or physician who is not the dentist who referred the patient. A patient goes to a general dentist, that dentist suspects a problem outside their scope, and sends the patient to a specialist or another dentist for an opinion. The specialist examines the patient, forms a diagnosis or opinion, and reports back to the referring dentist. That visit is billed as D9310. The code covers the consultation itself: the exam, the opinion, and the report. It does not include any treatment performed that same day; a filling, extraction, or root canal done at the same visit gets its own code. D9310 is not for case presentations, treatment plan reviews, or second opinions a patient asks for on their own. Those situations use a different code or none at all.

When to Use D9310 (And When Not To)

Use D9310 when three things are true: another dentist or physician made the referral, the visit is for an opinion or advice on a specific problem, and no treatment happens at that same appointment. A patient with a suspected fracture gets sent from their general dentist to an oral surgeon for a look. The surgeon examines the area, forms an opinion, and writes it back to the referring office. That is a textbook D9310 visit.

What does not qualify: a patient who calls your office directly and asks for a second opinion on treatment they already discussed somewhere else. A case presentation where you walk a patient through a treatment plan you are about to perform yourself. A consult that turns into same-day treatment, where the exam and the procedure happen in one visit. In each of those cases, D9310 is the wrong code, and billing it that way is a common reason claims get denied.

D9310 vs D0140: What's the Difference

D0140 is a limited, problem-focused oral evaluation. It is used when a patient comes to their own dentist, or a dentist in the same practice, with a specific complaint like pain or swelling. The dentist examines the one problem and treats it, or plans to. D9310 is different in two ways: the patient was referred by a different provider, and the visit is for an opinion, not ongoing care from that office.

Think of it this way. If the patient is seeing their regular dentist about a new problem, that is D0140. If the patient was sent by someone else specifically for a second set of eyes, and that provider is not planning to be the one treating them going forward, that is D9310. Mixing the two up is one of the most common coding errors we see front desks make on referral visits.

Is D3310 a Root Canal?

Yes, but it has nothing to do with D9310. D3310 is anterior root canal therapy, excluding the final restoration. The two codes look similar on paper, one digit apart, and that is exactly why they get confused at the front desk or in a billing spreadsheet. D9310 is a consultation. D3310 is endodontic treatment on a tooth. If a claim comes back denied and the code on the form does not match what was actually done, check whether a digit got transposed before anything else.

Is D9310 Covered by Insurance?

Coverage for the D9310 dental code depends on the plan. Many dental plans cover a consultation at a set frequency, often once per provider per patient per year, sometimes bundled with diagnostic exam limits. Some plans treat a consultation the same as any other diagnostic exam and apply it against the same annual limit. Others pay it separately. Waiting periods on a new plan can also block the visit from paying out even when the code is billed correctly. None of this is standard across payers, which is why the same consult can get paid by one plan and denied by another with the exact same documentation.

The ADA Health Policy Institute found that 43.3% of dentists already use AI for at least one task in their practice, and insurance verification ranks second among planned uses, at 32.6% planned versus 13.6% in use today. That gap matters here, because checking a patient's plan before a referral visit still falls on the front desk at most offices, and a consult code that gets denied for a coverage reason is usually one that could have been caught before the appointment.

How to Verify Coverage Before You Bill D9310

The only way to know if D9310 will be covered for a specific patient is to check their plan before the visit, not after the claim comes back. At Valian, the office signs in and runs the check in one click, in seconds, for each patient. Nothing runs automatically or overnight. The front desk picks the patient, runs the check, and gets back the plan details, frequency limits, and waiting periods that matter for that visit. The office still decides which code applies; Valian does not pick codes or file the claim.

If the visit is a referral consult, confirming the patient's plan ahead of time tells you whether D9310 is likely to pay, or whether the plan treats it the same as a regular exam. You can see every payer we verify in real time if you want to check how a specific plan handles consultations. For the coding side, our CDT procedure code guide breaks down D9310 alongside related codes like D0140.

FAQ

Is D9310 covered by insurance?

It depends on the plan. Many plans cover one consultation per provider per year, sometimes counted against the same limit as a diagnostic exam. Checking the specific plan before the visit is the only way to know for sure.

What does dental code D9310 mean?

D9310 is the CDT code for a consultation, a diagnostic opinion given by a dentist or physician who did not refer the patient. It covers the exam and the opinion, not any treatment done at the same visit.

What is the difference between D9310 and D0140?

D0140 is a limited, problem-focused exam done by the patient's own dentist for a specific complaint. D9310 is a consultation requested from a different provider, used when the visit is for an opinion rather than ongoing treatment from that office.

Is D3310 a root canal?

Yes. D3310 is anterior root canal therapy, excluding the final restoration. It is a different code from D9310 and has nothing to do with consultations. The two are easy to mix up because the numbers are close.
