Is electroacupuncture covered by insurance?
Same answer as regular acupuncture: it depends on whether the plan bought the benefit. 97813 covers the first fifteen minutes of a needle session where a small current runs through the needles. The current does not change the coverage rule, and on Medicare only chronic low back pain qualifies at all.
Depends
Same rules as plain acupuncture
Not with 97810
One initial acupuncture code per visit. If the needles carry current, the visit is 97813, and 97810 does not belong on the same claim.
97814 add on
Each extra fifteen minutes of hands on time bills 97814. Re inserting or adjusting needles counts, sitting alone with the machine running does not.
Not pad e stim
This is not the electrical stimulation pad code. Billing 97014 or G0283 for current running through needles is a coding error payers catch.
One second check
Acupuncture benefits vary by plan and by license. One check before the series shows status and deductible left, and tests the service type against the plan.
What would a real check show for this patient's 97813?
Pick a sample plan and type your fee. This is the visibility a real-time check gives the desk for every actual patient, in under a second.

- 20 visits per year, 4 used

When 97813 is the right code
- Current runs through the acupuncture needles themselves
- Fifteen minutes of face to face time is spent
- It is the first acupuncture code of the visit
- Start and stop times are in the note
- The plan covers acupuncture for this provider license
Documentation payers expect
Payers want time in and out, the points and the stimulation settings, and the diagnosis. On Medicare the chart also has to show the low back pain has lasted at least twelve weeks and has no other identified cause.
Why electroacupuncture gets denied
What happens over a course of care
Electroacupuncture usually runs as a series, and each visit repeats 97813 plus 97814 units on the longer sessions. If the office also adjusts or does manual therapy that day, 98941 or 97140 land on the same claim and pull from a limit that may be shared. On a capped plan the visits run out mid series and the rest turns into cash. Knowing plan status and the deductible before visit one keeps that conversation off the front desk.
97813, quick answers
Is electroacupuncture covered like regular acupuncture?
Yes. Plans treat 97813 the same way they treat 97810, so if the plan carries no acupuncture benefit, adding current does not help.
Does Medicare cover electroacupuncture?
Only for chronic low back pain, up to twelve sessions in ninety days with eight more if the patient improves, and never when a chiropractor bills it.
Why is only one acupuncture code on my bill?
Only one initial code, either 97810 or 97813, belongs on a visit. The extra time shows up as 97811 or 97814 units instead.
Does electroacupuncture use my chiropractic visits?
It can. Some plans run acupuncture, chiropractic and therapy against one shared yearly limit, so a mixed visit can burn more than one kind of care.
Is this the same as the pads on my back?
No. Pads on the skin are a separate treatment code such as 97014 or G0283. With 97813 the current runs through the needles themselves.
