Turn on two-factor authentication
Two-factor authentication pairs your Valian login with an authenticator app on your phone. Here's how to set it up in about a minute, and what to do if you lose your phone.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) pairs your Valian login with an authenticator app on your phone. The app shows a 6-digit code that changes every few seconds, and only your phone has it. Each person turns 2FA on for their own login.
What you need
A free authenticator app on your phone, like Google Authenticator, 1Password, or Authy. That's the only kind of second step Valian offers today. Text-message codes, passkeys and backup codes aren't available.
Turn on two-factor auth
- Open Settings → Sign-in & security. Find the Two-factor authentication card. It shows Off or On.
- Flip the switch on. Valian shows a QR code.
- Scan the QR code with your authenticator app. Can't scan it? Type the key shown under Can't scan? Enter this key by hand into the app instead.
- Type the 6-digit code your app shows right now and select Verify & turn on. This proves your app is linked.
- Check the card. It now says Two-factor is on. Your Settings → Your profile page shows it too.
Changed your mind partway through? Select Cancel and nothing is saved.
Signing in once 2FA is on
From now on, Valian asks for your code every time you sign in.
- Sign in as usual: with your password, or with Continue with Google or Continue with Office 365.
- Valian shows Two-step sign-in. Open your authenticator app and find the code for Valian. It changes every 30 seconds.
- Type the 6-digit code and select Verify. You're in.
Code didn't work? Type the one your app shows right now. The old one may have just changed. To start over with a different login, select Back to sign in.
If you lose your phone
There are no backup codes, and an Admin can't remove your 2FA. Email help@valiansystems.com from the address you sign in with, or submit a ticket from Help if you can still sign in, and we'll help you set it up again on your new phone.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use an authenticator app? Yes. It's the only kind of second step today. Any free authenticator app works.
Can I get codes by text message, or use a passkey? Not today.
Can we require 2FA for everyone at our office? Not today. Each person turns it on for their own login.
Can I see which teammates have 2FA on? No. Each person sees only their own status, on Sign-in & security and Your profile.
Can an Admin see my codes or my password? Never. Your codes and your password are personal to you.
What if a staff member leaves? Remove their login from Settings → Team & logins. See Add another user to your practice for how.
