Syncing your carrier list (in and out of network)
Your carrier list in Settings › Insurance tells every check whether you are in or out of network with each carrier, and with each of its plans. Pick carriers or upload a list, then press Save carriers.
Updated Oct 1, 2026
Many plans pay one amount when you are in network with the carrier and a different amount when you are out of network. Your carrier list tells us which one applies to your office. Every check you run reads it.
Open Settings, then Insurance. The card asks Which insurance do you take? You can pick carriers here, or upload a list.
Note
Nothing on this page saves by itself. When your list looks right, press Save carriers at the bottom. It says Saved when it's done.
New to Valian? Your carriers are one of the two things you save before your first check. Checks can't run until your carriers and your codes are saved.
What the list does
- A carrier set to In-network shows the plan's in-network side: the coverage, deductible and annual max for in-network care.
- A carrier set to Out-of-network shows the plan's out-of-network side.
- A carrier that is not on your list is read as in network.
- If your office takes no insurance contracts at all, tick We are not in any carrier's network. Every check then reads the out-of-network side.
On a result, Plan basics shows Your network for that patient.
Pick carriers one at a time
- Type in Search a carrier or add a carrier (for example "Cigna" or a local plan) and pick the carrier, or tap one under Quick add. A carrier that is already on your list says In your list.
- Set it to In-network or Out-of-network. With more than one carrier, Set all changes every carrier at once.
- Don't see a carrier? Click Add a carrier under your list and type its name.
- To take a carrier off the list, click the ✕ on its card.
- Press Save carriers.
Each carrier you add lights up with Added, so you can spot it in your list.
Pick the plans you take
Many carriers sell more than one kind of plan, and you may be in network for some and not others. An in-network carrier shows Plans you take under its name. For example, Delta Dental shows PPO, Premier and DeltaCare USA (DHMO). Tick the plans you are in network for.
- When the carrier tells us which plan a patient has, a plan you ticked reads as in network, and a plan you didn't tick reads as out of network. If the carrier doesn't say, the carrier's own setting is used.
- One plan stays ticked while the carrier is in network. If you take none of its plans, set the carrier to Out-of-network.
- Medicaid carriers have no plans to pick.
Upload your whole list
- Choose Upload a list.
- Click Download the template, or use a carrier list from your practice software as it is. One carrier on each row. A column that says in or out of network (for example "Participating" or "Non-Participating") sets the network.
- Drop the file in the box, or click choose a file. Excel and CSV files both work.
- Choose what to do with the carriers in your file:
- Add them to your list keeps your carriers and adds the new ones. A carrier in both takes your file's in- or out-of-network.
- Use only these clears your list. Only the carriers in your file stay.
- A red card is a name we couldn't match. Click Pick a carrier, search for it, and choose it. Or click Skip to leave that row out.
- Check the list, then press Save carriers.
Changed your mind? Click Undo the upload before you save, and your list goes back to how it was.
After you change a carrier
The numbers on a result come from the check. After you switch a carrier between in and out of network, click Re-verify on that patient to see the other side of the plan. A re-check is a new check.
Your list also comes first whenever you pick a carrier on a patient's card: it shows under Your carriers, at the top of the Carrier list.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to list every carrier? No. A carrier that is not on the list is read as in network. List the ones you are out of network with, at the least, so those checks show the right numbers.
Can I change the list later? Yes, any time. Make your changes in Settings › Insurance, then press Save carriers.
