Your billing NPI and tax ID

Every insurance check runs under your billing NPI, so it has to be right. Find it, fix it, and add your tax ID (EIN) in Settings › Connections.

Updated Sep 28, 2026

A carrier answers a check for a provider it knows. We send your billing NPI on every check, so the carrier can match it to your practice. If the number is wrong, checks can fail even when nothing is wrong with the patient.

Open Settings, then Connections. Billing NPI is at the top.

Check or change your billing NPI

  1. Look at the number in the Billing NPI box. A group practice uses its organization NPI. A solo practice uses the dentist's own.
  2. To change it, type the right 10-digit number and click Save.

Don't know it? Use Search the national registry right below. Type the practice name or the dentist's last name, and a town and state if you like, then click Search. Click the right match, then click Save to keep it. If nothing comes up, try the dentist's last name: many practices are registered under the owner.

Your tax ID (EIN)

Under the NPI is Tax ID (EIN), your practice's federal tax ID number. You can find it on your IRS letter or your W-9. Click Add (or Change), type the 9 digits, like 12-3456789, and click Save.

We keep your tax ID on file. It is not sent on a check, and a check never waits for it. Have both numbers ready when you ask a carrier to enroll your practice.

When a carrier says it doesn't have your practice

If a check comes back saying the carrier does not have your practice or your NPI on file, check this number first. A wrong NPI looks just like a missing enrollment. See The carrier does not have your practice on file.

Frequently asked questions

Where did this number come from? From your signup. You can change it here any time.

What if the box is empty? Then no check can run. You'll see "Add your practice billing NPI in Settings before verifying insurance." Add it here and run the check again.

Should I use the dentist's NPI or the practice's? Use the NPI you bill insurance under. For most group practices, that is the organization NPI, not one dentist's.
